about

Travel Music, the second full length album from Baltimore's To The Moon after a long hiatus (following 2009's Charmony), is music for the highway as much as for the dance floor.

In the tradition of instrumental bands like Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky, and influenced by live Drum & Bass, house and breakbeats acts like Roni Size, Lake Trout and Brothers Past, these 8 songs are notable for their variety. From the jangly melodic hooks of "Leap Year" and "Aliceanna", to the Deftones-inflected drive of "Blood Orange" and "Sand", to the frenetic breakbeats-meets-post-hardcore chug of "Pursuit", this album covers a lot of musical ground.

Although To The Moon is primarily a power trio of drums, bass, and guitar, Travel Music is laced with analog Moog synthesizer, which adds a welcome harmonic warmth to tracks like "Basement Party". Violin, theramin, and melodica all make appearances as well, rounding out a sound that is notable for its texture and tone.

In a way, Travel Music is a product of the subconscious, thanks to each song having its roots in live improvisations.

"We love to jam for hours at a time during our rehearsals, and I got in the habit of recording all these sessions and then listening back to them to pick out the parts that spoke to me," says Alex Dzwonchyk (guitar, moog synthesizer and violin).

"From there I'd assemble what felt like a song, and sometimes write a few parts that felt like the logical extensions of whatever we'd played, and then bring it to the band to arrange and flesh out."

The cinematic nature of the music lends itself well to video, and the band plans to release a video for each song on the album. The first video, for Vapors, is already available on YouTube (see link): www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGXNqE-o31I
